About Us

Brother playing on an African ranch

African roots, gratefully American

Suiderland Safari was founded and is managed by myself, Hans Visser, and my two sons Frederick and Sven. I was born in Namibia, and my sons in South Africa. After 15 years in the USA, we are grateful and proud Americans. We are settled and integrated, here on the Eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada. We have joined local hunting communities and have been lucky enough to draw some Nevada hunting tags over the last 5 years.

However, when my youngest hunted his first Eland on our SA visit in 2023, I saw him get re-attached to our continent, after leaving Africa at the age of 2, and I became painfully aware of something lingering in the background, namely the Africa-shaped hole in our lives

.

Brian Jackson (British Journalist and author) said: “Everything in Africa bites, but the safari bugs is the worst of all”.

Over the past three decades, I converted more than 8500 acres of cattle farm into two private game reserves, with my sons spending their first years on those reserves. Although we will continue our full-time careers in the USA, we embark on this endeavor to remain connected to our roots, while sharing our passion with like-minded people from our new home country and other parts of the world.

For those interested, below is a link to the website of one of the cattle ranches that I converted, from zero infrastructure other than cattle fences and dams, to a stocked private wildlife reserve. Since it was sold in 2000, the new owners added more buildings than I would have, given my "minimum footprint" philosophy.

Our mission

We want to be instrumental in increasing international eco-tourism and hunting in Southern Africa, to keep and increase the economic value of wildlife and natural habitat, ensuring sustainability, and the well-documented benefits of tourism to the people of Southern Africa.

We will contribute by promoting the harvesting of the now somewhat over-abundance of non-dangerous species, by introducing more international hunters to hunting other species, at more affordable costs.

We will attract the "next strata" of international hunter, that does not necessarily want to spend tens of thousands on a once-a-decade safari to hunt the biggest trophy species. We want to attract passionate hunters who might currently rely on tags for their annual hunting trip, who work harder and do not necessarily want to hunt the biggest dangerous species. We want more of these hunters to come to Southern Africa more often and bring their friends and family with.

More international visitors, more often, bringing more companions.

The passionate hunters that we have met in the USA and I know exist in elsewhere, know that the actual kill is but a tiny part of the experience. Africa is an unparalleled safari experience.
